Our Purpose: Why We Are Here

Read Luke 4:14-30

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
Because He has anointed me and sent me
  • to preach the good news to those who are poor without it
  • to heal the brokenhearted (broken, downtrodden)
  • to proclaim liberty to the captive
  • to proclaim recovery of sight to the blind
  • to set at liberty those who are oppressed (broken, downtrodden)
  • to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor

We have the power, presence, and anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Why?  To preach the gospel; to proclaim freedom, healing, & favor; to comfort, deliver, & declare.

To whom?  The poor, the broken, the captive, the blind, & the oppressed.

But they aren't here!  By and large, those who need ministry the most are not in church. They are still in the world.

The synagogue agreed with Jesus' theory of ministry.  They thought the message was great--until Jesus challenged their practice.  Then favor turned to fury, amazement turned to anger, compliments turned to condemnation.

Jesus knew they would think he should fix himself and leave them alone.

Jesus referenced the Sidonian widow and the Syrian leper to prove God's heart for the world.

Jesus indicated God's blessings would go to the Gentiles.

And for that they tried to kill him.

Our purpose is still the same:

To preach the good news, the gospel of the Kingdom, the message of salvation.

To preach freedom, healing, deliverance, and favor.

To preach to the poor without Jesus, the captive, the blind, the broken and downtrodden without Jesus.

We must remember:  they don't know Him.  They aren't like Him.  And they desperately need Him.

Our purpose is to be filled, anointed, empowered and sent by the Holy Spirit.

Our purpose is to use the anointing to touch our world for Jesus, to reach the world with the gospel, and to show our world His grace and favor.

How long has it been since we were really about the Master's business?
