You Light Up My Life

For You will light my lamp;
The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
Psalm 18:28

Someone once said that you cannot define darkness without reference to the light; for darkness is not the opposite of light, it is the absence of light. And there are many kinds of darkness.

When the sun goes down, it gets darker outside, but not completely dark. The moon and the stars and the street lamps still give light. Even in total cloud cover, there is still the light glowing through the atmosphere. I don't know that I've ever known complete darkness except in an intentionally created dark room where all sources of light are completely shut out.

Ignorance produces a mental darkness.

Injustice produces a social darkness.

Intolerance produces a relational darkness.

The Bible says the eye is the window of the body, and if the eye is darkened, the whole body goes dark. It's understood, of course, that blindness causes physical darkness in the body, but sin will induce a Spiritual blindness that causes the spirit to go dark, and the blinding of the prophetic eye in the church will cause the Body of Christ to walk in darkness.

But look what the Psalmist wrote--You, Lord God, will light my lamp and enlighten my darkness! God will light my lamp! He does not want us to walk in darkness or blindness, which is why He gave us Jesus as the light. And that light burning in us is the light of the world. All the lights of the universe could go out, but Jesus would still shine brightly!

And I love what King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 4:18--

But the path of the just
is like the shining sun,
that shines every brighter
unto the perfect day!
